    Le origini della festa dell'8 Marzo risalgono al lontano 1908, quando, pochi giorni prima di questa data, a New York, le operaie dell'industria tessile Cotton scioperarono per protestare contro le terribili condizioni in cui erano costrette a lavorare. Lo sciopero si protrasse per alcuni giorni, finché l'8 marzo il proprietario Mr. Johnson, bloccò tutte le porte della fabbrica per impedire alle operaie di uscire. Allo stabilimento venne appiccato il fuoco e le 129 operaie prigioniere all'interno morirono arse dalle fiamme. Successivamente questa data venne proposta come giornata di lotta internazionale, a favore delle donne, da Rosa Luxemburg, proprio in ricordo della tragedia.
